French tapas and quiz at Café Piaf

The french singer Edith Piaf has been the inspiration for this charming little place in Calle Buensuceso, an otherwise dark and quiet street trapped between Plaza de la Trinidad and Calle Puentezuelas. Over a few years this hidden tapas bar has still managed to work up quite the crowd of faithful customers. The secret is as follows: Absolutely WONDERFUL tapas with a french twist. Choose two varieties for your table, be it eggplant paté with garlic, Camenbert with jam, cheese gratinated potatoes or spanish ham on rustiqe bread. Eat and enjoy, while listening to yes, Edith Piaf, The Beatles or other classics.

Though quite a small bar with a chilled out environment, every thursday night around 22.00 the place more or less fills up for the popular knowledge quiz. Twenty questions of all different categories are read out in first french, then spanish. And if you win, round of tapas for the table, or even a bottle of wine!

Tuesday night is "Noche de los pisos", where you can come to either look for a place to live or for a new roommate to your apartment. In the case of not having any luck, the bar keeps a big book where you can write down your information and even attach photos.

New to the list of activities in Café Piaf is "Noches de Trueque", started up to help out in times of financial difficulties. This is an arrangement set up to organize exchange of goods and sevices with no money included. " An electric reparation for a massage, or a new video game in exchange for babysitting", is the motto. Stop by to check out the offers - or simply to enjoy the "can´t get enough of them" -tapas...

Bodegas Castañeda

Bodegas Castañeda is the mother of all tapas bars in Granada. This is where you have to start. It is for sure the most famous one. There are plenty of reviews written and we will not bother to add anything. Just go there and see for yourself. That is if you can get through the crowd of course.

Tapas with desserts at El Reventaero

In Calle Gonzalo Gallas, right off Plaza Einstein, you can find one of those tapas bars that almost has it all: El Reventaero. With lots of seating and quick, efficient table serving, this is a hotspot for students and other tapas cravers. Here you are able to choose which tapas you want with your drinks; up to two different sorts per table. The list of choices is varied and contains hamburgers, calamares, grilled meat, typical spanish dishes and numerous bocadillos (spanish sandwich) as well as vegetarian options. The hamburgers are big, and the potatoes with alioli are delicious.

As a special treat, this tapas bar throws in DESSERT for those who have the urge, which you can ask for with your second round or later. Usually you can pick your favorite here as well: do you fancy a chocolate cake, a flan (pudding) or perhaps strawberry? The desserts are not the biggest, but come in addition to your pick of tapas for the round. There is only one trick: If you don’t eat your dessert, you pay for it!

If you’re planning to visit the Reventaero, it can be wise to pick your day. Popular and busy as it is, a late Saturday night is not the best time if what you’re looking for is a quiet break in a cosy environment. The environment is cosy enough, but in rush hour the bar appears a bit like a diner, with big, hungry groups of friends having the waiters run warm. There’s even a sign saying “ask for the bill at the table, or else we go crazy!” That being said – El Reventaero is popular for a reason.

Cafeteria Dnieper

In the heart of Granada and around the university buildings, the competition between tapas bars is tough. The bars will overgo each other in tapas size and quality. You may not get traditional tapas, but they will be big and tasty. This is where students go, and many simply live on what they eat here.

Close to nearby Plaza Einstein, you will find Cafeteria Dnieper. Great friendly service and big tasty tapas. Mmm...

Hiking along Rio Genil

If you are ready to leave the noise of Granada behind, and do some walking while listening to the running water of Rio Genil, the restaurant Los Pinillos is a great destination. We started our walk from Cenes de la Vega, just outside Granada. But you can start from downtown Granada , and just follow the river upstream.

Los Pinillos is a well known restaurant and when the weather is nice they will open the outdoor service just across the road. We ordered some drinks and got our tapas, which was nice, but nothing spectacular. However after an hours walk in the sun, a beer and any tapas will do.

Bar and restaurant Cno. Los Neveros

If you feel like getting away from the center of Granada for a while, there is a little tapas bar located in Huetor Vega that I can recommend. It also has has a dining room, so it may be more correct to call it a restaurant. The place is called bar Cno. Los Neveros and is surrounded by other more famous restaurants, such as Los Perdices.

The tapas served is very good and traditional. We came here to have raciones. Raciones are like big tapas, but you pay for them. You can also get 1/2 raciones. So to satisfy every ones desire, you order several differentraciones. Very friendly and personal service.

Just a typical tapas bar in Granada

Cafeteria DA-MI is a friendly little tapas bar located not far from Hipercor (Mendez Nunez) in Granada. This is a nice clean little bar, where parents often stop by, before they pick up their children from the school, Los Agustinos, across the street.

This time they served Migas for tapas. At Cafeteria DA-MI you will always get good tapas and great friendly service. You can also have a full meal here if you prefer that.

Just a typical tapas bar in Granada. A drink and some migas. Nice.

No tapas at Puerta del caballo.

We set off for tapas today, but ended up with main meal only. Some restaurants/tapasbars in Granada tend to reserve the majority of the tables for main meals, or dinner if you like, only. That means they have 10 tables or so with good comfortable chairs reserved for this. While only a couple of tables with hard wooden chairs, are for having tapas. Puerta del caballo is such a place.

After sitting down you learn that at this table, there is no tapas. Not even with the beer before the meal is served. I do understand that these places need high income due to high rent, but... So, if you want tapas, stand up by the bar or go somewhere else.

In the central area of Granada, there are many places like this. And they are a bit expensive too. So in my opinion, the only reason for coming here for tapas, is the location, which of course is excellent.

So I think we can say that if you want the best ratio between tapas size and price, you need to move out of the central area of Granada. And I think we can say that Plaza de Bibarrambla is more or less in the center.
